The Band

May 1984 - This was our first gig with Howie. We are playing on the terrace in front of Ferris Booth Hall at Columbia (no longer standing). Pictured left to right are Kevin Trainor, Brian Miller, Bob, and Howie. The first Barbecue Bob & the Spareribs show took place at the Furnald Folk Festival at Columbia University in 1981, followed by shows at the Postcrypt coffee house. A long residency at Dan Lynch’s blues bar (booked by blues artist Bill Dicey) followed. Looking for a neighborhood bar, the band settled in at the Blue Rose Lounge at 106th St. & Broadway (NYC). Bob stocked the jukebox with his favorites and began booking acts as diver@1983 Blue Rose Lounge. The stage (an overturned pool table) had been moved from the back of the room to the front (facing back). Alecka's mother was still resting in her "Strato-lounger". From left to right Kevin and Bob.se as The Holmes Brothers, The Raunch Hands, Bobby Radcliff, and The Dogmatics (from Boston). During this period, the band released two 45’s on their own label, Rib recor@1988 Howie Wyeth at the benefit for Howie's broken leg held at McGovern's on Spring St., organized by Steve Antonakos. Photo by Kristin Callahan.ds, (“Linda Lu” b/w “Shake Your Money Maker” and “My Barbecue Baby” b/w “Oedipus Rex”), acquired drummer/pianist Howie Wyeth, and began a series of shows opening for national acts at the original Lone @1998 On tour in Pittsburgh Pa. at The Starlight Lounge. LtoR Dave Ross, Scott Byrne, Bob, Dave Dreiwitz. Star Caf¨¦ (13th & 5th Ave. NYC). The Spareribs were still playing the Blue Rose and Dan Lynch’s, and had expanded to Philadelphia, doing frequent shows at Taker’s Caf¨¦ (Germantown) and Bacchanal (13th & South St.). The Ribs released two full-length  cassettes (“The Best So Far”, and “Shut up and Play”) and began a long relationship with the Rodeo Bar (27th & 3rd Ave. NYC) around 1987.

July 1986 - Opening slot with Roy Buchanan (see ticket) at the Deck House, Asbury Park. The show was organized by Dave Myers (formerly of the Blackberry Blues Band). Dave also had us open for Buddy Guy and Junior Wells here. What a cool gig!

The Spareribs had by this time begun playing in New Jersey clubs such as Wallace’s  (East Orange), Tierney’s (Montclair), and opening for nationally touring acts at the Stanhope House (Stanhope). Two more full-length cassettes followed (“Four on the Summer 1997 - Simon Chardiet and Bob being kind to animals at Bob's parents home in Ohio, on their way to play a week of shows on South Bass Island on Lake Erie. L to R Simon, Blackie, Bob, Snoopy Floor”, with Simon Chardiet on guitar, and “Wages of Sin”, with Dan Hovey and Ira Spinrad on guitars).

At this point (1992), the Spareribs became an all New Jersey outfit, based out of New Brunswick, and hooked up with DaDa Records, a D.I.Y. label, releasing two 7”mono records “Snack Time”(’96) and “Side Order” (’97) .

1997 - The Spareribs play a free show at the homeless shelter in Columbus, Ohio. Bob's dad was the Director of the shelter. We went over pretty well. L to R, Bob, Bob's Dad,Tom Diello, Ira Kaye (Malcolm Tex).

They included the “A” sides on their first full-length CD “After School Special”, and have been touring the South and Midwest in support of these releases, building a small but loyal following as far as Chicago and New Orleans.

With their latest CD “Pass the Biscuits!”, Barbecue Bob and the Spareribs are poised to conquer the world, or at the very least, make it to California (and all points in between).

Simon Chardiet(Guitar)

Simon has the distinction of being one of Bob's longest-running musical collaborators, carbon-dating an appearance on an early spareribs demo tape in 1980.

Simon was a founding member of "Joey Miserable & the Worms" along with Jono Manson, Mark Ettinger and a list of noted alumni too long to mention right now...

Simon also is the bandleader of  "Simon & the Bar Sinisters" releasing several cd's and currently active.    www.simonchardiet.com

He also has recorded and performed with Jon Spencer, James Chance, the Slackers, Rancid and many others.
